Loveland area business news includes the end of off-track betting at a Fort Collins restaurant, and an award for efforts to create a monument to women in Estes Park that saw Loveland sculptor Jane DeDecker create tributes to Larimer County women.

Sundance Steakhouse & Saloon in Fort Collins announced it ended participation in the off-track betting business at the close of race day Aug. 28.

In 2011, the restaurant brought betting back to Northern Colorado after a four-year hiatus that came with the closing of the Cloverleaf dog track in Loveland in 2007. Sundance partnered with Arapahoe Park, now Bally’s Arapahoe Park, to bring Northern Colorado customers a chance for betting on horse and dog races.

Due to changing times, the ability to wager online and the impending closure of more tracks in 2023, Sundance owner, Nicole Scott, decided it was time to close the chapter on off-track betting in Fort Collins, the release stated.

“We have seen a steady decline in off-track betting as a whole over the past six years of ownership,” she said in the release.

Scott said more than 750 people attended a Kentucky Derby party in 2019 in the middle of the day, but this year, when all Sundance’s other events are trending toward pre-pandemic attendance numbers, only about 250 people attended the Derby party.

”The public’s opinion of racing is also a huge factor in our decision,” Scott said. ”Whether their opinions on the lives and treatment of the animals is correct or not, their perception is reality; and the reality is horse and dog racing — and the number of tracks they race on — is dwindling.”

Scott said the team at Sundance Steakhouse & Saloon will now focus and expand on other areas of entertainment that they have been known for, including live music.

“Northern Colorado has a love for community, in general, and we are also blessed with a fantastic local music scene,” she said.” I think a large part of this is due to Pat Stryker and the Bohemian Foundation, and while I’m not a billionaire philanthropist and my reach doesn’t go quite as far, my goal is to do what I can to continue to support both of those together.”

In addition, Sundance’s decades-long run of bull riding started its fall series Sept. 3 in the back lot arena.

“We definitely won’t get rid of the dance floor. Or the prime rib,” Scott added.

Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies (OCR) will hold its 17th annual Total Joint Surgery Walk virtually throughout September.

The event to celebrate the accomplishments of all patients who have had hip, knee, or ankle joint replacement surgery and are back to moving as they used to is free to participate in, and the first 500 registrants receive a free T-shirt.

Register at jointwalk.orthohealth.com. Participants can download the free activity tracking app Strava and will be directed to join the “OCR 2022 Joint Walk Club.”

Everyone who completes their walk or posts on social media or Strava using the hashtag #OCR2022JointWalk will be entered to win prizes.

The YMCA of the Rockies Women’s Monument Plaza Committee received History Colorado’s Josephine H. Miles Honorary Award for its efforts to create a monument to Larimer County women.

The monument features 12 sculptures, created by Loveland artist Jane DeDecker, highlight the trailblazing women, both past and present, of the Estes Park community.

The committee selected the 12 women who represent the diverse local voices in Estes Park’s history and collective memorialization of so many influential women from the community, according to a news release from History Colorado.

The collection of bronze sculptures is one of the few examples of public art dedicated to women in Larimer County, the release said.

The award, which is given to highlight outstanding projects throughout the state that further understanding of Colorado history in exemplary and unique ways, came with a $500 prize.
